During twelve months, each time around full moon, I spent one night with a group of homeless people at the main railway station of Ghent, mainly listening, talking, watching, laughing, walking, sitting, learning, and photographing. And eventually —sometimes— briefly sleeping as well. What came out was fascinating and stunning, for living outside, without a room of one’s own, a home, or neither, is not for the faint of heart.
After this first year, I continued to follow some of these people individually for another two years. Each of them happened to be off the streets by then, either in a hospital, a self-made shelter or in a real apartment. One of them, Peter, passed away on 4 August 2013.
This project was published on 10 pages in De Standaard Weekblad on 14-15 June 2014: ‘No room but a view’ – beeldverhaal.
