Queer tango in Istanbul

My schedule22-27 June 2011, Istanbul, Turkey
My planMake a photo reportage on queer women, lesbians, drag kings and ftm’s, on a personal and engaged level, in the week running up to the Gay Pride on Sunday 26 June 2011.
The outcomeMuch more then I bargained for.
Politics, activism, queerdom, queer tango, amazing parties in amazing locations, some new friends, and a Pride with over 10.000 participants.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Turkey demand equality. The Amnesty International report ‘Whose morals? Equality now for lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people in Turkey’ tells the facts & figures, published 20 October 2011.

And finally, a publication Queer tango in Istanbul on 2-3 July 2011 of three full pages in one of the leading Belgian (Flemish) newspapers De Standaard – a collaboration between a talented journalist Ann-Sofie Dekeyser, an invaluable ‘assistant’ Gaea Schoeters, and me, meeting the almost impossible deadline.

Ze sprongen ‘uit de kast’, kropen over het Tahrir-plein en lieten de Arabische lentes even voor wat ze waren. Holebi’s over de regenboogrevolutie in vijandelijk gebied.
